Experience Rexit! in French, a theatre performance about the Belgian royal question. Featuring Bruno Vanden Broecke, Valentijn Dhaenens, and Vincent Stuer. Last season, Bruno Vanden Broecke and Valentijn Dhaenens conquered many a Flemish and Dutch theatre with Rexit!, the little-known but completely fascinating story of the Belgian WWII-era royal question. They performed the two-hander in Dutch, but this year they’re electing a different national language: they will be bringing you Rexit! in French (with Dutch surtitles). The ideal way to catch the performance if you missed it – and to bring your French-speaking friends. For Rexit! Valentijn Dhaenens and Bruno Vanden Broecke step into the skin of former Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Paul-Henri Spaak and King Leopold III. The play zooms in on the Royal Question – a conflict that stretched over a decade and ultimately led to a popular referendum that forced every Belgian to take sides – pushing the country to the brink of civil war. The clash between Spaak and Leopold is not only a confrontation between two historical figures who made different choices during the war, but also between two distinct personalities and opposing worldviews. It forms the original spark from which our contemporary democracy was born. Rexit! in the press“An engaging piece of Belgian history brought to life through crackling dialogue.” – Theaterkrant“Both actors excel in their natural performances: Dhaenens effortlessly portrays Leopold as an arrogant monarch convinced of his own rightness, while Vanden Broecke displays such natural charm, humor, and nonchalance that it’s easy to imagine how he rose as a political figure to become President of the UN and later Secretary General of NATO.” – Theaterkrant
