place Sainte-Croix, 1050 Ixelles
Dee Dee Bridgewater ranks among the most distinctive voices in jazz for many years. With her project WE EXIST!, the singer places her artistic and social engagement at the centre of a programme that explores the power of music as a form of resistance. Inspired by the legacy of the civil rights movement, Dee Dee Bridgewater breathes new life into iconic protest songs by Nina Simone, Gene McDaniels, and James Brown, among others. Together with an all-female lineup, she turns these protest songs into more than just socially conscious tracks: they become musical manifests carrying stories and questions that still resonate today, while also helping to imagine change. WE EXIST! takes stock of a long struggle for equality and firmly turns its gaze toward the path that still lies ahead.
