For this creation with the graduating class of Brussels’ Superior School of Circus Arts (ESAC), Side-Show brings to the stage an iconic figure of the street: the circus at the red light. An urban activity that is somewhat punk, ephemeral and wild, what does it become once invited onto the theatre stage? Under the watchful gaze of Aline Breucker and Quintijn Ketels, the stage transforms into a life-sized crossroads. Here, the spectacular lies not only in the act but in the waiting: the raw beauty of a group standing motionless at a pedestrian crossing, the urgency of a 60-second act – the duration of a red light – and the poetry of everyday life when it departs from the ordinary. True to the “relaxed” approach cultivated by Side-Show, the show questions our perceptions of performance. Between the act-shaping power of speed and the delicacy of the collective, where does the spectacular lie? Five solidarity tickets at €5 will be set aside for each performance of performing arts projects (with some exceptions).
