“Everyone’s a lesbian.” Garance Maillot grabs hold of this joyfully direct statement with both hands and takes it as the starting point of a choreographic narrative about legacies. She draws on mourning, specifically of her grandfather, to explore the potential meanings of identifying as a lesbian today. Chairs arranged around her personify presences. They call to mind figures long rendered invisible: Loïe Fuller, Jill Johnston, Lucinda Childs and Valeska Gert – all artists who have left their mark on dance and lesbian thought. Alongside these artists, Garance Maillot seeks answers with the audience: what does the word “lesbian” encompass? Can a lesbian or queer work be viewed simply as a work of art? Surprising and illuminating, this one-woman show traces out a new lineage that unleashes transformative forces. Five solidarity tickets at €5 will be set aside for each performance of performing arts projects (with some exceptions).
