Lima becomes the stage for the misfortunes and dreams of two penniless artists in love. But when the Viceroy of Peru, as powerful as he is capricious, takes an interest in the young Périchole, their destiny is suddenly transformed. Amid courtly intrigue, disguises, and sincere emotion, events unfold in a whirlwind that is as comic as it is touching. A leading composer of the Second Empire, Jacques Offenbach remains the undisputed master of French operetta. In La Périchole, he combines irresistible melodies, sharp theatrical instinct, and biting social satire in a score that is both brilliant and deeply expressive. In this new ETCetera production, director Andrew Fisk offers a lively interpretation of the work, carefully attuned to its rhythm and humour. Under the musical direction of Steven de Mesmaeker, Offenbach’s score comes vividly to life, delivered with elegance and energy by a dynamic, committed cast.
