Jan van Ruysbroeck was a Brabant cleric born in 1293 who, thanks to the number and quality of his writings, occupies an important place in the Western spiritual movement known as “Rheno-Flemish mysticism”. He was Dean of St Gudula’s Collegiate Church until 1343, before founding the Groenendael Priory in the Sonian Forest. He died in 1381 and was beatified by Pope Pius X in 1908. His feast day is celebrated locally on 2 December. The lecture will discuss his life, his personality and the relevance of his spiritual work today.
